Samajwadi party leader Akilesh Yadav was in combative mood in parliament when he blasted the Home Minister for revoking special status to India’s northern-most state.
“I was told revoking Article 370 will bring development to Kashmir. Am happy about that, but if Article 370 was the reason that held up the progress of Jammu and Kashmir, then what is the reason why Uttar Pradesh is lagging behind in development?” Mr. Yadav questioned the Home Minister. “You say nothing happened to Kashmir since 70 years of independence; are you counting the 11 years you have been in power?” The former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh attacked the government over the status of PoK, and asked when special privileges granted to north-eastern states would be reviewed.
“The government must answer who PoK belongs to. And why have you not been able to fill the 24 seats (PoK) vacant in the constituent assembly of Jammu and Kashmir?” he continued, and wanted assurance from the Home Minister that these seats would be filled.
