Mamallapuram Prepares for President Xi's Visit

The ancient and coastal town of Mamallapuram is gearing up for the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping.He is arriving in Chennai this afternoon for an informal nearly 24-hour visit. PM Modi has arrived in Chennai and was received by Govenor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minsiter E.K.Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O. Paneerselvam, as well as Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal at the Chennai airport.

The coastal town is located 56 kilometres away from Chennai. Meanwhile, a gate has been decorated with 18 varieties of fruits and vegetables in Mamallapuram to welcome the Chinese President.

The two world leaders will take a tour  of three monuments - the iconic Arjuna's Penance, which is an intricately carved sculpture, Krishna's Butter Ball which is a huge boulder on a slope and the Pancha Rathas, a five chariots monument. The historical coastal town once had maritime links with China during the Pallava dynasty. It was a major port city in the seventh century.

The tour will be reflective of a symbolic walk into an era of trade ties between the heritage coastal town and China around 1,600 years ago.The heritage town had served as a gateway for imports and exports to China and South Asia.

Some key issues will be discussed by the two leaders but it is an infomal summit, the first one being held in Wuhan, China in 2018. The leaders will attend a cultural programme performed by the Kalakshetra Foundation and then PM Modi will host a dinner for President Xi at the Shore temple.
