Gandhi Family No Longer Under SPG Cover

Gandhi Family No Longer Under SPG Cover

The SPG (Special Protection Group) which essentially is used for the protection of the Prime Minister and a selected few, now remains out of bounds for the Gandhi family.

The Gandhi family will no longer be entitled to the SPG cover, which will continue only for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This decision taken by the Central government becomes a political flashpoint. Ever since the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been covered by the SPG.

After a review of the security arrangements, sources claim that there were multiple violations by the three Gandhi leaders that led to the protection being pulled out. The Gandhi family reportedly did not co-operate and impeded the functioning of the SPG on numerous occasions. According to reports between 2015 and 2019, Rahul Gandhi spurned the use of bullet-proof vehicles 1,892 times in Delhi alone. He also is said to have used non-bullet resistant vehicles for travellign outside Delhi at least on 250 occasions.

Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi too violated rules by travelling in non-bullet proof vehicles on 389 occasions in the same period. Even on foreign visits, it appears that Rahul Gandhi did not take SPG cover on 143 such visits. In fact, he shared the itinerary at the eleventh hour making it difficult for accompanying him on tours.

The Gandhi family has been among India's most protected family apart from the Prime Minister, who alone will get the 3,000 strong SPG cover.
