Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister, O.Paneerselvam presented the Budget in the State Assembly on March 15th, 2018. This Budget has a few ‘firsts’ to it. It is the first Tamil Nadu Budget presented after the implementation of the GST (Goods and Services Tax). The Budget is also a first, ever since the Tamil Nadu Government witnessed a merger of the warring factions, of Chief Minister E.Palaniswami’s ruling AIADMK, and Deputy Chief Minister, O.Paneerselvam’s led AIADMK faction.
In the advent of the Aadhaar card, much was debated, as the biometric ID was touted to be India’s single most important mode of biometric database. With the initiation of the Aadhaar, the Centre has been pushing for a deadline to link the Aadhaar card with services that include bank accounts, mobile numbers, insurance, passports, employee pension, and other services that include social welfare schemes and subsidies. The Centre has been pursuing the linking of the Aadhaar card to various services in an attempt to keep track of each bonafide citizen.
