The agrarian crisis that India has been facing over the years, with no end in sight, marks troubling times for the nation. Facing droughts, heavy monsoons and floods, the farmers have either had crop-failure or had them washed away. To crown their troubles, loans taken from money-lenders at high interest rates, with no proper access to bank loans, has landed the farming community in despair, with no will to live. Thousands of farmers have committed suicide, leaving their families in poverty and despair.
The Lok Sabha by-polls in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar turned out to be a nightmare for the BJP(Bharatiya Janata Party). In what came as a rude shock to the BJP, the Samajwadi Party and the BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) teamed up together to swing ahead in the by -elections being held in Uttar Pradesh. The Samajwadi Party has surged ahead of the BJP by over 20,000 votes in the fight for the Gorakhpur parliamentary seat, which is the home-base of Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath. Praveen Kumar Nishad of the Samajwadi Party defeated BJP’s Upendra Dutt Shukla by 21,000 votes.
