'Dr. Bomb' Goes Missing

A convict serving a life term in various bomb blast cases, Jalees Ansari has gone missing. A resident of Mominpura in south Mumbai's Agripada, Ansari is believed to be a suspect in several bomb blast cases across the country.

Ansari was on parole for 21 days from the Ajmer Central Prison, Rajasthan. Expected to surrender before prison authorities, he went missing. Ansari was  ordered to visit the Agripada Police Station every day between 10.30 a.m. and 12 noon to mark his attendance. However, on Thursday, he did not visit at the designated time.

Family members say that he awoke in the early hours, saying he was going to the mosque for 'namaz'. His son, 35 year-old Jaid Ansari later went to the police station to report that his father had 'gone missing'. Based on the son's complaint, the Agripada Police Station registered a missing person's case. The Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police as well as the Maharashtra ATS have launched a massive manhunt for Ansari.

An MBBS doctor, Jalees Ansari was indoctrinated by another terrorist, Abdul Karim Tunda. Ansari has been jailed since 1994 when he was first arrested by the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) for his alleged role in planting a bomb in the Rajdhani Express. He also has been serving a life term after being convicted of carrying out blasts in trains on December 5 and 6, 1993, at six locations in Rajasthan.

Ansari has been accused in several blast cases, where he allegedly planted bombs in Hyderabad, Malegaon, Pune, the Rajdhani Express among several others, post the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid. In 2018, a Malegaon court held him guilty and awarded him a 10- year jail sentence, for carrying out a bomb blast experiment below the Girna river.

Popularly known as 'Dr. Bomb', Ansari was allegedly connected with terror organizations that include SIMI and Indian Mujahideen. He also reportedly taught terror outfits how to make bombs. Ansari was an expert in TNT and timer bombs. The police are on the look-out for the individual who stood guarantor for Ansari's parole and are scanning CCTV  footage in the area.
