It appears prominent personalities and celebrities are divided over social issues and violence across India. Earlier 49 eminent personalities had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the disturbing trends of mob lynching and community discrimination against minorities and Dalits. They also focused on the slogan “Jai Shri Ram” which they said was being weaponized and used against minorities.
The authors of the new letter expressing astonishment at the selective outrage and political bias included CBFC Chief Prasoon Joshi, Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, film-makers Madhur Bhandarkar, Vivek Agnihotri and classical dancer Sonal Mansingh. They wrote asking why these personalities chose to keep quiet when naxals were terrorizing and victimizing tribals, when separatists had issued diktats to burn down schools in Kashmir, and maintaining silence when demands for dis-membering India was made.
Ms. Ranaut said in a separate statement that everyone was part of ‘a major shift’ and common people had chosen their leaders. She said the ones who disregarded people’s will had no respect or consideration for democracy.
The signatories to the new letter attacked the 49 personalities, for criticizing the government, adding that under the Modi government they had maximum opportunities for liberty, to differ, to criticize and abuse the government. The spirit of dissent has never been stronger, they said.
