Dr. Khan Cleared of Charges
The BRD Medical College came under severe scrutiny when 63 children died in just two days in August, 2017. The reason for the terrible tragedy was that the oxygen supply to the children's wards at the hospital, including the critical care unit, ran out.
Dr. Kafeel Ahmad Khan was posted as a pediatrician (child care specialist) in the hospital. In the wake of the deaths, there was mass outrage and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the hospital. Dr. Khan was then suspended, with the UP government stating that he had failed to take action or inform his superiors about the impending crisis.
Dr. Kafeel Khan was suspended, arrested and jailed for his alleged role in the deaths of the children. Dr. Khan was reportedly the nodal officer and was in charge of the crucial encephalitis ward and should have known about the critical shortages.
Dr.Khan spent eight months in jail and was later granted bail by the Allahabad High Court in April 2018, stating they had no direct evidence of negligence on his part. The findings of the report by IAS officer Himanshu Kumar was submitted to the government and they in turn handed over the 15-page report to Dr. Khan.
