Bombay High Court: Aarey Colony Not a Forest

In a huge setback for the 'Save  Aarey' campaign, the Bombay High Court refused to acknowledge Aarey Colony, the only 'green lung' in Mumbai that  is home to 5 lakh trees, as a forest. The Government's proposal to fell 2,600 trees to make way for a metro car shed caused a raging controversy with residents protesting vehemently against the move.  "Environmentalists have failed," observed the  High Court.

The last two years have witnessed protests by environmentalists and public against the Mumbai civic body's Tree Authority of India for giving the nod to go ahead with the metro car shed. The petitioners are expected to take the case to the Supreme Court.

The Aarey Colony is a 'green belt' in suburban Goregaon and together with the Sanjay Gandhi National Park is called the 'green lung' of the metropolis. Some of Bollywood's celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar induced the wrath of the public by coming out and praising the Mumbai Metro project. They were troilled heavily by activists and the public alike.
